Welcome to the Dutch primary school in Melbourne!
De Leesplank provides education in the Dutch Language and Culture (NTC). The aim of the school is to align itself as much as possible with education in the Netherlands. We focus on the core objectives of the Dutch language.
In order to achieve a good connection with Dutch education, in addition to the Dutch language, the Dutch and Belgian culture is also part of our educational offer. The school takes into account the different backgrounds that the students have with regard to the Dutch language. That is why each student is carefully looked at personally and each child works at his/her own level.
The learning performance is systematically evaluated with the pupil and his/her parents.
In addition to our main goal to keep children connected with Dutch education/family , we also created a space for students who want to learn Dutch as a second language. We learn interactively through different methods and activities. In addition to the methods, there is also room for fun activities and other forms of education.
CLIMATE OF THE SCHOOL
The students who attend classes at the Dutch school her in Melbourne from group three (grade 1 in Australian education) have all completed a full day of Australian education. That is why we think it is important that the children who follow our Dutch education do so in a friendly and safe climate. Only when a child feels safe can it develop. Dutch and Belgian culture is regularly discussed in order to maintain the connection with both countries. This is a great advantage when the student returns to the Netherlands or Belgium.
De Leesplank is the private part-time Dutch primary school in Melbourne and the surrounding area.
The school was founded in 1997 and currently has over 60 students.
De Leesplank provides Dutch education for children between the ages of 4 and 18.
Corona has ensured that we now also offer online classes and teach students throughout Australia!
The school is a godsend for Dutch/Flemish speaking expats, who have settled here with their children and want to keep their mother tongue. In addition, De Leesplank is the ideal school for children whose first language is not Dutch. They can also master the language in a wonderful way. At De Leesplank, the children have a social frame of reference; they see and experience that more children in their environment are being raised bilingually. Not only does this increase their self-confidence, but also their way of thinking, performance and especially their creativity are positively influenced by this. The friendships that are formed are often very special.
The lessons are divided into two-hour clusters. For this reason, De Leesplank is no longer affiliated with the NOB (Dutch Education Abroad). In order to be affiliated with this organisation, a school will have to meet the requirement that students follow at least three hours of Dutch lessons per week. Experience has shown that this is currently not feasible for our students and parents.
As a result, as a Dutch school in Melbourne, we have gone our own way. There is, however, very close cooperation with the NOB and we regularly discuss our range of courses with them.
This gives the school the opportunity to work very independently and to develop individually adapted material for the personal needs of each student. We work together as a group, but each student works at his or her own pace and level! The school works with well-known Dutch methods such as: Learning to read safely, Taal Actief, Staal, Lijn 3, and Nieuwsconcept.
During the year we use method-bound tests for the teachers to monitor each student individually. In addition, we have a moment per year when we test the level of individual students on the basis of the Dutch Cito tests. When we know that students are returning to the Netherlands or Belgium, we introduce extra testing moments where necessary. We also hold parent meetings twice a year in which we discuss goals and progress and involve parents in learning and maintaining their child's Dutch.
These are FaceTime or Whats App video calls of about 15 minutes. At the end of the school year, all students receive a Reading Board report.
We always look forward to seeing new and familiar faces!
See you soon,
Het Leesplank team.
